The moon has long been important to cultures all around the world; it is a potent symbol which looms large in legend and myth, often being associated with powerful gods and goddesses. Although it’s now 50 years since man travelled to the moon and set foot on its surface, it still holds a great fascination – and is still associated with many superstitions today.

Once in a Blue Moon

Many cultures split their calendar into twelve sections – as we do today – because there would usually be three full moons in each season and twelve in one year. However, because the full moon cycle lasts for 29 days and the year for 365, it doesn’t always match up this way. This means that sometimes there will be an extra full moon, called a Blue Moon. Because this doesn’t happen frequently – only once every three years or so – we have the saying “Once in a Blue Moon” for any rare occurrence.

The Rabbit on the Moon

Intriguingly, many different cultures from the ancient Chinese to the Native American Cree people tell stories of a rabbit on the moon. One Buddhist story tells the tale of a monkey, an otter, a jackal and a rabbit who all resolved to practice charity on the night of the full moon. When an old man begged them for food, the monkey gathered fruit from a tree, the otter caught fish, and the jackal stole a lizard and a pot of milk-curd. The rabbit, however, knew only how to gather grass, which was of no use to the old man. Therefore, the rabbit threw himself onto the fire that the old man might eat him; but he was not burnt. The old man revealed himself to be ?akra, the ruler of the heavens, and was so touched by the rabbit’s virtue that he drew the image of the rabbit on the moon.

Lunatics and Werewolves

The moon has long been thought to exert a power over the minds of people on the earth below, causing madness – the word “lunacy” comes from “luna” for the moon. This may not seem so absurd – after all, it can control the tides of the sea, and the human body contains a lot of water. Even today, hospitals and police forces often say that there is a noticeable increase in incidents on the night of the full moon.

The influence of the moon was also said to cause more supernatural effects, turning men into rabid werewolves. This idea is still found today in many films, books and television programmes, although not so frequently encountered in real life.
