Runes and Psychic Readings

As I mentioned before, some psychics use different tools to assist them during psychic readings. Among these tools is the ancient art of reading the runes.

About Runes

The actual origin of runes is somewhat debated by historians. For our purpose here, it suffices to say that according to Norse legends, a set of 24 runes was revealed (in the shapes and combinations of stakes thrown to the ground) to a shaman by the name of Odin as he was hanging upside down from a tree. Often shown forming a circle, these runes form an alphabet (depending on traditions, the arrangement of the runic alphabet used may vary slightly in order and the exact shapes of runes).

runes

There are at least three ‘different’ runic alphabets, the Elder Futhark, the Anglo Saxon Futhark and the Uthark, which is supposed to show the true, original order of the runes. Depending on the tradition followed, each rune has a specific name and shape; potency (or power), key quality and meaning, as well as being associated with a specific:

  • Direction (east, south, west or north)
  • Tree
  • Time of day
  • Season
  • Set of dates (as a so-called birth rune)

The first rune of the Uthark arrangement, Ur, for instance, is associated with the West, Silver Birch and eventide (evening); Autumn and as a birth rune the dates between the 22th of December to 19th of January.

Other runes in this arrangement include (in order):

  • Thurs, Ass and Reid
  • Ken, Gifu and Wynja
  • Hagal, Naud and Iss
  • Jara, Pertra and Eoh
  • Algiz, Sol and Tyr
  • Bjarka, Eh and Madr
  • Lagu, Ing and Odal
  • Dagaz and Feh

Using Runes in Psychic Readings

Runes are typically used in psychic readings by focussing on a particular question or problem at hand, selecting a number of runes at random and, after laying them out in a spread, interpreting their meanings in relation to each other and, of course, the question to be answered.

The Medicine Wheel Spread, for instance, is a very simple spread using just five runes. Here, the:

  • First rune is positioned to the east (#1 in the diagram), where it represents the past, the source of a problem
  • Second rune is positioned to the West (#2), where it represents the present and the influences affecting it
  • Third rune is positioned to the South (#3), where it represents the future and energies likely to be manifested according to current (present) conditions and influences
  • Fourth rune is positioned to the North (#4), where it represents the challenge produced by the problem and what can be learned from that challenge
  • Fifth rune is positioned in the centre of the spread, where it represents what is required in order to restore balance and resolve the problem

By interpreting the meaning of each randomly selected rune in accordance with its position and the in relationship to the problem in question, the reader can then provide helpful information and advice on how to deal with/solve a problem.
