06 Jun Understanding the Secrets of the Tarot
Tarot cards are, perhaps, one of the most well-known forms of divination; although they began as playing cards, they have been used by psychics since the 18th century, and provide a powerful divinatory tool.
A typical Tarot deck has two parts; the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana is the suit of cards that most people picture when they think of the Tarot; the named cards, numbered from 0 to 21. The Minor Arcana bears strong similarities to ordinary playing cards; four suits, numbered ace to ten, with court cards. However, the suit names are different and there are four court cards instead of three.
Each card of the Major Arcana shows a scene with symbolic elements; these symbols help the psychic to make their connection and understand the meanings of the cards. Whilst the imagery of some cards can be a little disturbing at a glance, it must always be remembered that they are never to be taken literally; they are symbols to be interpreted, and do not always carry the most obvious meaning.
The Minor Arcana once featured pip designs, much like the standard playing cards which we’re familiar with today, however today many of the decks available bear symbolic scenes just like the Major Arcana, designed to help psychics interpret their hidden meanings.
Whilst the most common Tarot deck design is the Rider-Waite Tarot, there are many different decks available today. Many psychics look for decks which resonate with them personally or even design their own; you can find decks inspired by Celtic or Greek mythology, ones using beautiful Art Nouveau designs or very modern images, but all use the same common symbolic elements for each card, so they retain the same meanings and power.
The number of cards chosen for a reading, and the pattern in which they are laid out, will vary depending upon the question or circumstances which the psychic is seeking insight into. The most simple is the three card spread – one card to represent aspects of the past, one card to represent the questioner’s current situation, and one card to represent aspects of the possible future.
Each card will be turned over individually, and the psychic will attune themselves to both the questioner and the card revealed to reach their insights. By considering each card on its own, and then the spread in its entirety, a talented psychic can offer advice, guidance and insight on whatever circumstances or questions may be troubling you.
